FIAT 124 ABARTH RALLY
FIAT 124 ABARTH RALLY
It is a road car with strong sporting qualities that Pininfarina was able to create thanks to the collaboration with Abarth technicians and the experience of the Fiat Racing Team.
The consensus is very favourable, the numerous orders allow production to exceed one thousand units compared to the 500 initially planned.
Only three colors are available: Bright Red, Light Blue and White, the bonnet and the rear one are made of matt black polycarbonate, with two air vents on the front one whose closing system consists of two rubber hooks anchored on the fenders . The doors are made of aluminium. The bumpers in chromed ferrous material disappear, replaced both at the front and rear by two overriders in black plastic-rubber material. The canopy as in the previous racing version of the Fiat 124 spider gives way to the hard top in black vinyl material. The molded sheet metal grille, the fender tailpieces, the external rear-view mirror, the license plate lights and the fascia under the license plate are of the same color. Three additional air vents have been created under the grille.
The cockpit, as befits a racing car, is extremely spartan, in order to obtain maximum lightness and is equipped with a roll-cage. The side windows and windshield are thinner, the deflector is fixed and the internal rearview mirror frame is simplified.
There is no sound-absorbing material or rear seat, the door panels are reduced to a minimum, the seats are the same as the spider version but Recaro wraparound seats with built-in headrest are optional. The dashboard that contains the instruments is no longer made of wood but an anodized aluminum sheet, the console and the glove compartment door are missing. The steering wheel is a three-spoke Abarth with a black leather rim, the horn button bears the Abarth coat of arms on a black and white checkered background, and the double terminal muffler is also an Abarth model. The fuel cap is externally located at the base of the rear window. The engine has the same 1756 cc block as the spider version and the Fiat 132 but delivers 128 hp instead of 118, after the review carried out by Aurelio Lampredi who had initially designed it. The camshafts are phased while the fuel unit consists of two double-barrel Weber carburettors 44idf20–44idf 21. The exhaust manifold is larger than the standard one. The gearbox with five close ratios is redesigned by Abarth technicians. Furthermore, the self-locking differential is installed as standard. the rear suspensions are independent with McPherson struts.
These characteristics make it a very lively and at the same time flexible car, the engine picks up well at low revs and easily reaches a speed close to 200 km/h, it holds over-revs well and proves to be very snappy thanks to the close gear ratios.
His history in competitions is another story and would be too long to tell here.
A very well preserved example, it has undergone a conservative restoration during its life and is now ready to be widely enjoyed by its future owner, it does not require any intervention other than the restoration of the original dashboard.
